A Closer Look At Toric Contact Lenses
Contact lenses quickly established themselves a valuable product to people with vision problems once they released to the public. Since then, a number of advancements have been made so the contact lenses can be worn by people with specific eye related conditions. Toric contact lenses are one such solution that has proven invaluable. They were created to help people who suffer from having an astigmatism as regular contact lenses because traditional contact lenses simply couldn’t be worn. While they continue to become more well known, many people still have questions about toric lenses. Here is a closer look at what they are and how they can help.
If a person has an astigmatism, then their eyes must use special contact lenses that are designed to compensate for the irregular shape of the cornea. Toric contact lenses are the solution to this problem. They are often made from a water-based gel-like material that allows them to be both comfortable and flexible, while still ensuring better vision. The reason that using soft contact lenses is that they allow the surface of your eye to get oxygen. The gel-like material allows oxygen to pass through the lens and directly to the eye. As an added bonus, toric contact lenses can also correct nearsightedness and/or farsightedness at the same time that they address the astigmatism.
The primary difference is that regular contact lenses are designed to fit to the natural curvature of the eye. However, people that have an astigmatism do not have a normal curvature, which is where toric lenses come in. Aside from their design, they function the exact same. However, it is important to note that because toric lenses are designed differently, there are some big differences between them and traditional contact lenses. One of the most glaring differences is that they are constructed in a much different way. Because there are a variety of different power combinations, a toric lens must be custom fit to your eye. This means that before ordering these lenses, the correct fit must be found. This means that toric lenses are often more expensive than traditional lenses. It also means that you cannot simply stop by your optometrists and get some new contacts. They will most likely need to be specially ordered and will take a few days to receive them (so plan ahead).
If these types of lenses are not for you, there are other similar options available as well. Sometimes a regular lens is enough to “mask” the astigmatism, however this is only the case if your astigmatism is relatively minor. There are also smaller, more rigid contact lenses that can be an alternative to toric lenses. They are easier to take care of and often last much longer. However, they are also more expensive and will often be uncomfortable for several weeks before your eyes get used to them.
Hopefully this has helped you to better understand toric contact lenses, what they are, what they do, and why they have become popular. However, if you are looking for an alternative type of contact lenses to deal with your astigmatism, make sure to visit your optometrist and talk to them about what other options would likely be the best fit.
